Privacy Policy
Versus is a music-ranking app. This policy describes what we collect, why, and what we never do. The short version: you can use the whole app as a guest; an optional Apple account links your rankings across devices; the only ads are short clips you choose to watch to unlock extras; we use no third-party analytics, and we never sell your data.
What we collect
- As a guest — nothing identifies you. Your rankings live on your device. When you finish a ranking, the result (artist and song order) is also stored on our servers so its share link works, and is publicly readable at that link. You can remove the link from inside the app at any time.
- With an account (Sign in with Apple) — we store only the pseudonymous Apple identifier. We do not keep your name or email address, even if Apple shares them at sign-in. Rankings and sessions you create while signed in are linked to that identifier so they follow you across devices.
- Purchases — the Pro unlock is processed entirely by Apple. We never see payment details; we store only a flag that your account has Pro.
What we don't do
- No third-party analytics, and no ads forced on you — the only ads are optional clips you choose to watch (see below).
- No tracking across apps or sites without your permission — iOS asks first, and declining still gets you ads, just non-personalized ones.
- We never sell or rent your data to anyone.
Optional rewarded ads
Free use of Versus includes optional "watch a clip" ads served by Google AdMob — watching one can unlock an extra battle session or fresh recommendations. There are no banners and no ads between battles; an ad only ever plays when you tap to watch one. Pro removes ads entirely.
When an ad plays, Google receives standard ad-request data from your device: device identifiers, IP address (which can imply a general location), and how you interact with the ad. Whether ads may be personalized is controlled by iOS's App Tracking Transparency prompt; if you decline, Google may not use your device identifier for tracking and serves non-personalized ads instead. You can change your choice any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. Google's handling of this data is described in Google's advertising privacy notice.
Where requests go
To build and verify an artist's catalog the app asks our servers, and our servers consult music databases — MusicBrainz, Deezer, and Apple's iTunes Search API. Those lookups carry artist and song names, never your identity. Optional song recommendations send artist/song titles to our AI provider — again, no personal identifiers.
A couple of things load straight to your device instead of through us: album art comes from the Cover Art Archive, and 30-second previews stream from Apple's content network. Because your device fetches those directly, those hosts see your device's IP address, the same as loading any image or audio on the web. We don't receive or store it.
Our service providers: Cloudflare (hosting) and Turso (database), plus Apple for sign-in and purchases. They process data on our behalf and don't get to use it for their own purposes. Google serves the optional rewarded ads and handles ad data as described above — it is the one provider that processes data under its own policy rather than ours.
Public content
Every finished ranking gets a public link so you can share it. The link is a long random id that isn't listed or searchable anywhere, and the page never shows who made it. You can take the link down from inside the app at any time.
Deleting your account
Settings → Delete Account permanently removes your account, your server-side rankings and sessions, and revokes the Sign in with Apple credential. This is a hard delete, not a deactivation, and it doesn't require contacting anyone.
Children
Versus is not directed at children under 13, and accounts may only be created by users 13 or older.
